Wow!! We Were Bombed On

Our First Night In New York

I know it's not unusual to go out and get bombed in New

York after a long flight from the Cali. But this type of

BOMB was a little more than we bargained for.

This was the scene that greeted us literally steps from our hotel

entrance. Indeed a very exciting reception wouldn't you say.

After this what else is there?

We had just arrived from California and were Ubering our way into Manhattan when we heard what seemed to be dozens of sirens closing in all around and coming in behind us.

They just kept coming and coming. There must have been dozens of them and it seemed like they were literally escorting us right to the doorstep of our hotel which is the New York Edition at 5 Madison in the Chelsea district.

Our Uber ride had to drop us off a block away (actually in front of the Eataly for those who know NYC) because the police had all the roads blocked off surrounding our hotel. So we proceeded to walk there until we were stopped and interrogated by the police.

They wouldn't let us proceed until we could confirm our identify and that we were actually guests of the hotel. Of course it looked all the more suspicious and didn't help that the only thing we had with us was a small black suitcase and my back pack (BACK PACK?) as our luggage missed the connecting flight and won't be arriving until this morning.

The whole area was closed down to traffic and pedestrians. It was an eerie and surreal feeling in NYC. Kinda like a SciFi movie. Finally after about 10 minutes of convincing them that we were really guests they let us enter our hotel. Phew! finally here and waiting for our luggage and might even have to get bombed while doing so. LOL.

Only in New York City. But we went out on the town in spite

of everything and had a blast!! New York is still New York

and folks soon went on about their business and pleasure as

the night was young and the food is always great. Not to

mention mention the adult beverages.

No, Welcome to New York Jessie Cochran I've had 3 very interesting trips to NYC all relating to 9/11 and the WTC. I'll actually be blogging about the in a forthcoming post.

Hate it when that happens anywhere... but especially in my hometown of NYC. And yet I've always had that niggling feeling that something would happen like this sooner rather than later. Glad you're safe and enjoying the city and now you have a great story to tell for years to come.

John,

I know exactly where you were, and I love Eataly!  Enjoy New York.  A

Never been bombed in New York City.  However, a bomb went off across the street from our hotel in Rome... one week after we returned home!  That was sobering.

Not to "mention mention" the adult beverages.... let me guess, you wrote this after having said beverages?

Quite a few people were injured in that blast. Very sad that this stuff happens at all. Anywhere.

Oh wow, what a greeting.  Yes, all over the news here.  I had a scare one time when I was going home from workand  walking towards Grand Central and there was all this smoke coming out and wall of people (I worked 2 blocks away).

No one knew what was going on, but I basically walked from (if you could call it that) from 42nd Street to 125 Street.  When I first called my mom, they said there was no info/it wasn't on the news yet, so none of knew what was going on.  Thankfully, it was just a regular explosion in the subway and not something way worse.

I'm glad I don't work in the City any more.  I had too many times after 9/11 getting worried about going to Grand Central.

Certainly enjoying it a bit more since we received our luggage Ron and Alexandra Seigel . Walked about 10 miles today and have to take in the Book of Mormans this evening. I was sweating it out literally and figuratively.

The gift of life is very fragile Debbie Gartner no doubt. It takes things like this to make us really appreciate just how dear it really is and how close to our fate we can get every day.

Well if the rest of our stay was as good as today I think we're in for a very successful visit Michael Jacobs

Actually Scott Godzyk it was really more exciting than scary for some reason. That stated, I might have had a much different perspective had I been one of those unfortunate ones who were injured.

Thanks Susan Haughton it was definitely a very interesting start to our trip for sure.

I don't know guys.  I think that may have been a message to turn around and get back on the plane and head for Florida.

Unfortunately, John, I'm afraid you are right about this. And two more events since then, including stabbings in Minnesota and bombs found in Elizabeth, NJ overnight at the train station.

Heading for Ellis Island this morning and the Statue of Liberty Nina Hollander . Sounds crazy but we're not feeling any fear whatsoevr. I guess there's so much of this stuff going around nowadays it's desensitized us.

Could be a good thing. Could be a bad thing. I'm really not sure at this point. But I know we must keep on keeping on and not give in to the whims of these idiots.

I've always been amazed at how the folks living in places like Syria and Libia just seem to continue on about their day whenever terror strikes. Now I'm getting a first hand dose of it. We're not about to just sit here in our hotel room and cow in fear.

It is our new reality and we are living in a different World today.

John DL Arendsen ~ I get it, John. I lived in Paris and London when there were such attacks... you stay vigilant, but you can't stop your life. Ellis Island is still on my bucket list.... wasn't open when we moved from NYC to Charlotte and have just never had a chance to go there yet. Enjoy!

Phew! A bomb scare for real. So glad to read that even though you had challenges getting to your hotel all is well.  And now I just read the Q&A section that you are in Montreal.  Be safe & enjoy.

Hi John DL Arendsen ,  Well, look at it this way...... In the future, you have something exciting to talk about when you went to New York City.  In reality, there is too much of that going on and I wish thinks were a lot more peaceful.
